White man, Black man, Asian and a Hispanic...tell me if you've heard this one before?

This post is in regards to one of the comments pertaining to voting and T.V. shows such as 'Survivor'. I find it ironic that the show was brought up and then lo and behold, this morning I open my Internet browser (Firefox) to Yahoo! News and I read about Survivor dividing the 4 tribes in accordance to Ethnicity for the upcoming season.

Whites, Blacks, Asians, Hispanics. Now if this is not a shock, I do not know what is. Think about last year, dividing the tribes based on Men Vs Women/ Young Vs Old and there was an outcry of discrimination then.

What is going to happen when this season begins? As I write this now, I glanced over headlines on Drudge Report and one of the captions stated, "NYC Officials call for Survivor to be pulled". I, probably just like you, realize that the "D" word is going to be thrown all around this fall as tribes compete on a daily basis, but there can be only one Survivor. In case you're wondering, the "D" is discrimination. I wonder which group will be the first to yell the "R" word (no, not Recount)? I'm sure the ACLU is honing their skills because I am sure there will be lawsuits out the wahzoo.

My question for you, the reader, is- Do you think it is a good idea for Survivor to divide the tribes based on ethnicity and what are the repercussions that will come of this?

It's my opinion that the producers of Survivor knew this would be divisive, and would generate a huge uproar in the media. It's free publicity, right? Why not take the challenge segments to the next logical step, and have a basketball challenge, or a hockey game - really think outside of the box when it comes to racial stereotyping. CBS will laugh this one all the way to the bank.

On another topic, great website guys. Keep up the good work!

All of these reality shows where people are voted off are fixed by the producers anyway. Few people can win by their own merit, luck or whatever. The tv show, "The Last Comic Standing" is one that comes to mind. It may have been on the first season where it became obvious to the judges that certain contestants were being pushed thru without being selected by the judges. Also this year on the show, a really not-funny "minority" guy made it to the top two. Were the phone-in voters the ones that made the final decision? Probably not.

Also, these shows are stacked with so-called "minorities" to be "representive" of our society. Creating a mini-society unfolding before our eyes on TV. There's the token "african"-american, the token asian, the token white hillbilly redneck racist with no teef, the token female with man issues, the token whatever... In reality, these "reality" shows don't really represent our society with the ratio of minorites to the ratio of non-minorities that are on these shows. They claim to seek diversity. The minorities have become the majorities. It's blatant shove this down your throat mentality. It shouldn't be that way. People are just people -- enough with the labels. Maybe that's why Survivor is spicing things up with the segragation -- we've already been exposed enought to the diversified tribes.

CBS is making a bold move with this segregated survivor especially with their and other networks attempt to exemplify and promote PC mentality, diversity, etc. This will be interesting to watch how it unfolds. And to see who or what tribe the producers "choose" to come out on top.

As Diego noted, other seasons of Survivor pitted a men's tribe against the women's tribe. This made me think of one of the seasons of the Apprentice where college educated contestants were pitted against "street-smarts" contestants. I'll admit that made for good tv just as this season of Survivor will as well.

This is from Boortz.com regarding Boortz's comments on this issue... As usual Boortz offers his own interesting take on it.

RACE-BASED SURVIVOR CAUSING CONTROVERSY

Things have been a little slow in the reality TV department lately. The once white-hot segment of television shows has cooled. That could have something to do with the fact that we now have 10,000 reality shows about everything you could possibly imagine. This has also affected one of the original reality shows, 'Survivor' on CBS.

So, with ratings slowing...it was time to spice things up a bit. The people at the show decided to do something different this year. They're going to start the show out with 4 teams: an Asian team, a white team, a black team and a Latino one. That should really get people watching. But not everybody is happy with this.

Officials in New York City, of all places, want the show pulled. According to City Councilman John Liu, "The idea of having a battle of the races is preposterous. How could anybody be so desperate for ratings?" CBS says they recognize the show will be controversial. Of course, they know exactly what they're doing.
I have no problem with the Survivor format. There is nothing in the world wrong with ethnic pride .. and this is all about ethnic pride. However ... if you're handicapping this show, a few suggestions:

--If survival depends on math skills ... bet on the Asians.

--If survival depends on the ability to withstand cold temperatures ... bet on
the white guys.

--If survival depends on a strong work ethic ... go with the Hispanics.

--If survival depends on outrunning something that wants to eat you ... bet on
the black team.

So there you have it...your own personal 'Survivor' viewing guide!

They should definitely make taking the SATs one of the tasks.
